Food preservation, any of a variety of ways for keeping food from spoiling after harvesting or slaughtering. Such behaviours can be traced back to ancient times. Drying, chilling, and fermentation are among the earliest techniques of preservation. Modern techniques include canning, pasteurisation, freezing, irradiation, and chemical addition. Packaging material advancements have played a significant influence in current food preservation.

PRESERVED FOOD IS NOT GOOD FOR HEALTH
“They're ubiquitous in processed meals we buy at the grocery store,” said Stephanie Haiku, another qualified die titian.
Natural preservatives, such as salt, sugar, vinegar, and citrus juice, are also available, but their use typically comes at a greater cost to the food maker.
Artificial preservatives aid in "lowering the cost of that food product for the consumer.
However, in addition to these advantages, there may be certain health risks associated with artificial preservatives.

WHAT EXACTLY ARE SYNTHETIC PRESERVATIVES?
Artificial preservatives, according to Luis, are chemical compounds that are added to food during the production process.
Sodium benzoate, sorbet acid, butyrate hydroxyanisole (BHA), and butyrate hydroxytoluene are among the most commonly used (BHT).
“Sodium benzoate is a preservative and antimicrobial agent found in tomato products, pickles, ascorbic acid is sometimes known as calcium sorbet or potassium sorbet on labels.
a preservative found in jams, cold-processed smoked and salted fish paste, concentrate juice (excluding frozen concentrate juice), minced meat, pectin-based marmalade, jam, syrup, pickles, relishes, smoked or salted dried fish, ketchup, tomato paste, tomato puree, margarine, and salad dressing. "Cues, fruits, fruit salads, jams, and cider, salad dressing, and various meat and poultry items.
According to Luis, BHA and BHT are preservatives with "antioxidant characteristics."
“They keep fats fresher for longer by preventing oils from going rancid.”
They're in fats and oils, potato chips, dry breakfast cereals, parboiled rice, and chewing gum, among other things.

ARE ARTIFICIAL PRESERVATIVES HARMFUL TO YOUR HEALTH?
Some artificial preservatives, such as nitrites and nitrates found in processed meats, have been proved to be harmful to human health, according to Haiku.
“It has been established that consuming these preservatives increases our risk of colon cancer and should be reduced in our diets. Some individuals try to avoid artificial preservatives by using natural preservatives. However, natural does not always imply healthy, according to Haiku.
“For example, ‘all natural' alternative preservatives might include things like sugar and salt,” she explained. “We know that excessive levels of them in our diets are harmful to our health, even if they originate from natural sources.”
Using natural preservatives might also be more expensive.
“Consumers will only pay a certain amount for a fast food meal, and it must taste excellent in order to sell.”

SHOULD YOU STAY AWAY FROM ARTIFICIAL PRESERVATIVES?
According to Luis, actively avoiding artificial preservatives is a personal choice.
“When taken in moderation, they should offer no health risks... “How much is too much to have an effect on one's health is still up for debate,” she added.
“As a result, it is advisable to avoid processed and take-out meals such as snacks, candies, and fast food. Consume fresher and minimally processed foods, which have fewer to no additives and are healthier in general.”
She also suggests preparing your own meals at home using healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits, whole grains, eggs, fish, chicken, and legumes.
If you wish to avoid artificial preservatives, carefully read the labels on the products you buy. “These components are generally put at the bottom of the list since they are only utilised in modest amounts,” Luis explained.
“Check the expiration date on the packaging of grab-and-go meals from grocery shops and delis. To prevent preservatives, consider products composed entirely of organic ingredients.”
